Das Besondere an der Trauung von Harry und Meghan
Brautübergabe: Abweichend von der "Ordnung für die Feier der Trauung" der Anglikanischen Kirche, findet bei dieser royalen Hochzeit keine wirkliche Brautübergabe statt. Die Ordnung sieht vor, dass der Brautführer die Braut hereinführt und neben der Braut am Altar stehen bleibt, bis - im Zentrum der Trauzeremonie - der Geistliche fragt: "Who giveth this woman to be married to this man?" ("Wer gibt diese Frau zur Hochzeit an den diesen Man?" Der Brautführer (üblicherweise der Brautvater) reicht auf diese Frage die rechte Hand der Braut an den Geistlichen, der sie an den Bräutigam weitergibt. Dagegen begleitet Prinz Charles die Meghan nur ein Stück des Weges (ohne Brautübergabe) und setzt sich dann. Das ist insofern bemerkenswert, als hier nicht nur mit der obligatorischen Agende (Agende = Das ist zu tun!) gebrochen wird, sondern auch mit der oft als mittelalterlich und patriarchalisch empfundenen und kritisierten "Zeremonie der liturgischen Übergabe" der Braut. Diese Form wurde sicherlich nicht nur gewählt, weil der Vater nicht anwesend war, sondern Meghan zeigt: Ich bin eine sebständige Person, Subjekt nicht Objekt, das weitergegeben wird.
Ringtausch: Erstmals bei einer Trauung eines Mitglieds des brittischen Königshauses findet ein wirklicher Ringtausch statt. Ob Charles & Diana oder William & Kate, nur der Ehemann gab einen Ring; die Frau hatte keinen Ring zu vergeben. Diese einseitige Ringübergabe hat etwas herrschaftliches, hinabblickendes. Die Art der Ringübergabe zeigt, welche symbolische Bedeutung man dieser zentralen Symbolhandlung gibt. Bei bisherigen Königshochzeiten war der Ring Zeichen des Besitzes und der Macht des Mannes. Bei dieser der Trauung steckt auch Meghan ihrem Ehemann einen Ring an den Finger (einschließlich Ringspruch). Das scheint nur ein kleines Zeichen zu sein, ist aber ein großer Schritt. Das bringt die Gleichberechtigung der Frau auch liturgisch zum Ausdruck und stellt die Frau mit dem Mann vor dem Altar auf eine Ebene.
Stimmung: Damals, bei der Predigt zur Trauung von William & Kate wirkten die Zuhörer als schliefen sie ein. Die Ansprache war nur acht Minuten lang, wirkte aber endlos. Die Predigt zur Hochzeit von Harry und Meghan durch den Bischof der Episkopalkirche war allein durch die Art des Vortags erfrischend. Ich hätte mir allerdings mehr persönliche Sätze an das Traupaar gewünscht. // Die multiethische Gästeschar und ebenso die Mitwirkenden zeigten, dass auch im Königshaus erkannt ist: Es ist eine neue Zeit angebrochen.

The Bridegroom places the ring on the fourth finger of the Bride’s left hand and, holding it there, says:
